Housing improvement programme launched in Vale
25 July 2012
The Vale of Glamorgan Council is embarking on one of its most
ambitious refurbishment projects, where all council homes in the
Vale will be brought up to the Welsh Housing Quality Standard
(WHQS) in accordance with Welsh Government requirements.
Kitchens, bathrooms, rewiring, heating systems, windows, doors
and roofs will be renewed over a four-and-a-half year period
commencing 3 September 2012.
Four external contractors have been appointed to work in
partnership with the Council and these include:-
| Contract |
Area Covered |
Contractor
|
| A |
Western Vale & Rural Areas |
Lovell Partnerships Ltd.
|
| B |
Barry Area 1 (Dyfan & Gibbonsdown) |
Ian Williams Ltd.
|
| C |
Barry Area 2 (Remaining Barry Areas) |
Apollo Property Services Ltd.
|
| D |
Penarth & Dinas Powys |
SMK Building & Maintenance Ltd. |
The contractors were appointed after an extensive procurement
exercise and all have considerable experience in delivering these
types of works.
The council’s own building services department will also be
undertaking some of the refurbishment works and this is mainly in
sheltered housing accommodation across the Vale.
The total cost of the programme is in the region of £82 million
over the contract period.
Neil Moore, Leader of the Council, said: "Council tenants have
been waiting for a number of years for the commencement of this
programme.
"We have appointed experienced contractors to deliver this
programme and I am confident that tenants will be pleased with the
work that is carried out. Not only will all council properties be
upgraded, but there will be wider benefits delivered by increasing
local jobs and apprenticeships in the area and spending the local
pound within the Vale. This is good news for the local economy.
"We are at the stage where the council and external contractors
are now gearing themselves up during the mobilisation period in
readiness for the contract start date. The council is mindful that
there will be disruption to tenants during these works. However,
tenant liaison officers have been appointed for each contract area
and their role is to look after the welfare of tenants and their
families during the works."
All contractors will be monitored on a continual basis and their
performance reported to the council and a Tenants Quality and
Design Forum.
