Netball fun day is a huge success
Led by Welsh internationals Suzy Drane and Siany Carrington, a
special netball fun day has been a huge success.
Staged at Barry's Colcot Sports Centre, the event featured more
than 20 students from Years 4 to 6 and was part of the Welsh
Assembly Government's £7.6m "5x60" sports initiative designed to
create opportunities for secondary school pupils to participate in
60 minutes of physical activity, five days a week.
Co-ordinating the event was Elin Leyshon, a tier 1 Welsh netball
player, who has been recruited by the Vale of Glamorgan Council
sports development team as "5x60" officer based at Ysgol Bro
Morgannwg - the Welsh medium comprehensive school - in
Barry.
Students participated in a range of netballing activities and,
after trying their hand at passing, shooting, attacking and
defending, enjoyed fun games.
Elin commented: "The day was a massive success and a fantastic
opportunity to take the game to the community. And the girls loved
it! They especially enjoyed the question and answer session with
Siany and Suzy to learn all about the requirements of being an
International player.
"Activities such as the netball fun day only stand to support
the '5x60' venture and get our young generation enjoying physical
activity."
The fun day was one of several supported by the Welsh Netball
Association in Cardiff and the Vale over the Easter break and was
designed to offer a taster of a Welsh netball development tour in
June.
The budding netballers were presented with free tickets to watch
Super League team Celtic Dragons.
