Anti drink-drive posters
Two Vale of
Glamorgan school pupils have taken both top prizes in an anti
drink-drive poster competition contested by pupils from schools
across seven South Wales counties.
Eight-year-old Abigail Mock, from Evenlode Primary School in
Penarth, won the first prize while the runner-up was ten-year-old
Chloe Thomas, from Barry Island Primary School. Showing maturity
beyond their years, both girls used their creativity to spread the
message, with Abigail's winning poster saying 'Think – don't drink
and drive'. Abigail and Chloe were presented with their prizes at
the launch of the Welsh Assembly Government’s Christmas anti
drink-drive campaign at the All Nations Centre in Cardiff.
Meanwhile, over 600 entries were sent in for the Vale of
Glamorgan Council's own anti drink-drive poster competition,
organised by the council's road safety unit. The competition once
again struck a chord amongst local pupils, as drivers of the future
were determined to get their message across to anyone who is
thinking of drinking and driving this Christmas and New year –
don't do it!
The senior school winner was Denholm Edmunds, 13, from Barry
Comprehensive School while seventeen-year-old Charlotte Davies of
Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School was the runner-up. The junior
winner was seven-year-old Jordan Birchall from Evenlode Primary
School, with runner-up Chloe Thomas amongst the prizes once
more.
There were several ‘highly commended’ entries in both
categories, all chosen by a judging panel of Vale Council staff at
the Dock Office in Barry.
Cllr Chris Williams, Vale Council cabinet member for planning
and transportation, said: "The annual poster competition brings out
the best in children’s creativity and ingenuity in designing a
poster that conveys such an important road safety message as we
enter the festive season of excess, at least for some people."
