Highlight Park Community Centre celebrates 20 years
Volunteers at
Highlight Park Community Centre have held a special birthday party
to celebrate twenty years of the centre serving the local community
in Barry.
The celebrations included a coffee morning with displays from
the Women's Institute, Weight Watchers, ceramics, card making, the
school of dance and the Cardiff and Vale orchid society.
One of the centre's talented members had crafted a beautiful
celebratory cake depicting the centre. The cake was raffled and won
by a lucky member of the orchid society.
Invited guests included volunteers who were involved when the
centre first opened its doors. Current committee member Maureen
Moreton gave an overview of the last two decades and recalled that
members had to sit on the floor at the centre's very first meeting!
The centre has since received grants from the Vale of Glamorgan
Council and is now fully furnished and painted an attractive sunny
yellow.
Siân Vaughan, the Vale Council’s community
development officer, said: “All of our community centres are
managed by volunteers. Highlight Park is no exception and has been
staffed by a wonderful team from day one. Thanks to all involved
for showing such tremendous community spirit.”
The centre is open every day and offers a wide variety of
interesting activities. There is something for everyone, from a
wine club, to yoga and the Cardiff and Vale orchid society.
