Vale of Glamorgan gardeners produce wonderful displays

Vale in bloom winnersResidents and local businesses have again been praised for extremely high quality entries in the annual Vale in Bloom competition.

The event is organised annually by the Vale of Glamorgan Council and, during an awards evening which he hosted at the Barry Town Hall exhibition area, Vale Mayor Cllr Clive Williams thanked gardeners and flower growers for their enthusiastic support.

The number of entries across all categories was almost 80, which was an increase of 20 per cent on the previous year, and Cllr Williams said: “The council was delighted with the encouraging number of entries, including new faces, and extremely high standards."

Prizes were presented by Cllr Williams and council leader Cllr Margaret Alexander.

Winner of the overall Vale in Bloom and Vale Villages front garden awards was Mrs S M Davies, of Nant Isaf, Wenvoe. Her success was, appropriately enough, in the same year that Wenvoe won the Best Kept Vale Village competition.

BARRY

In Barry, Patricia Dewit, of Pardoe Crescent, repeated last year's triple success in the front garden, hanging basket and window box categories.

Rowland Jenkins, of Hanover Court, Langlands Road, achieved a similar feat in the disabled gardener category where he shared top spot with Edgar Adams, of Maes y Coed.

Lianne Williams, of Teifi Drive, triumphed in the children's category for the second successive year, impressing judges with the standard of her entry and gardening knowledge.

The British Red Cross Day Centre at Breaksea Drive, Barry Island, also gained a second successive success in the residential home/sheltered accommodation category.

Cllr Alexander said: "Many of this year's entries were drawn to the attention of the Wales in Bloom judges, and no doubt helped Barry secure the runners-up spot in the large towns category in this year's competition."

Vale in Bloom winnersIn Penarth, Gerard Kingston, of Redlands Road, pipped Dennis and Anne Lush, of Tudor Close, in the front garden category to reverse last year's top placings, and Clifford and Pauline Parker, of Byrd Crescent, secured a winning double in the hanging basket and window box categories.

Third in the window box category, Kenneth Knapp, of Alberta Road, lifted the Robert and Joan Ernest Trophy for the best entry in the town's seafront conservation area for a third successive year.

Once again there were impressive entries from Penarth nursery schools, and Cllr Williams said: "These demonstrate the marvellous involvement of children, parents and teachers to create floral displays, and areas devoted to vegetable gardening and gardening for wildlife. These generate awareness of environmental issues in a fun way."
