Active for Life helped more than 3,000 people

A group of Vale of Glamorgan people have got together to celebrate the success of a Lottery-funded health scheme that has helped more than 3,000 people over the last three years.

Although the Active for Life (AFL) has come to an end, the good news is that part of the scheme - exercise referral will continue under the "Active for Life" banner following new funding from the Welsh Assembly Government. This means that people will still be able to receive exercise via a health professional referral.

The scheme organisers, the Leisure Services division of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, has worked in partnership with local organisations to try and improve the health of local residents by offering a range of physical activity opportunities.

At the get together of AFL steering group members, scheme manager Jon Rogers, who is the operations manager for LifeStyle Health and Fitness, said: “We are extremely pleased with how the scheme has worked. The community has responded to the opportunities provided by Active for Life and that is shown through the number of people who have benefited.”

Cllr Gwyn John, Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure, said: “We have seen an unprecedented take up of the Active for Life scheme by residents of the Vale and thanks go to all those who worked with us to achieve this success."

Speaking about future plans, he added: “We are extremely pleased that we’re still able to offer the exercise referral scheme via funding from the Assembly. This will mean that yet more people will benefit with better health and improve their physical activity levels.”

Individuals interested in still using the AFL scheme to improve medical conditions should contact AFL on (01446) 725959 or, alternatively, visit www.valeofglamorgan.gov.uk/activeforlife
