Art exhibition showcases work from Palmerston's creative adult learners
This year's annual art exhibition at the Palmerston Community
Learning Centre in Barry was the biggest ever and has been declared
a huge success by its organisers.
Over 350 exhibits were on display, showcasing the creative work
of students who have attended a wide variety of arts and crafts
classes held at the Vale of Glamorgan Council's adult education
centres and outreach venues in the Barry area.
Paintings and drawings dominated the display stands, while
tutors were on hand to discuss the courses. Life-drawing tutor
David Symons even put on a workshop to give visitors the chance to
experience a class for themselves.
Classrooms at the centre were overflowing with craftwork,
including decoupage, cardcraft, scrap-booking, upholstery, pottery,
jewellery and a huge display of sugarcraft floral arrangements and
decorated cakes.
Meanwhile, tutors proudly displayed samples for new courses
starting in September, including kiln-fired glass, machine
embroidery, patchwork and quilting.
Other exhibition highlights were the photographic work - both
traditional black and white and colourful digital photos taken by
students - as well as the beautiful wedding-themed floral displays
created by the flower arranging class.

Debbie Lewis, adult education officer, said: “The exhibition has
been such a huge success once again this year. The students loved
the chance to show off their work and so many people dropped in to
meet our tutors to find out about the new courses on offer. The
exhibition was so well attended that we have already decided to
make it a week-long event next year to allow more people to see
some of the wonderful exhibits of art work, photography and crafts
produced by our students.”
Headteachers from Barry Island and Sully primary schools were
also invited to the exhibition so that adult learning students
could present them with cheques for funds that had been raised at
the community learning centre to go towards the primary schools'
garden club projects.
New courses start in September across the Vale, and full details
of all courses can be found in the Vale Council's new lifelong
prospectus, available at the Vale's libraries and main community
centres in Cowbridge, Barry and Penarth. Alternatively, you can
