Making Space for Wildlife

Making Space for Wildlife

help local wildlife

The Vale of Glamorgan Council has launched a new project to help protect and safeguard the future of local wildlife.

"Make Space for Wildlife" is a series of leaflets, which have been produced by the Council’s Biodiversity Team for schools and community and town councils with the aim of helping enhance, create and manage areas for wildlife.

Each leaflet contains practical ideas from making wildflower meadows to building bird boxes and homes for hedgehogs. To help them get started, each school and community/town council is eligible to receive two free bird boxes and a grant of up to £100 for biodiversity improvements.

The Vale is rich in wildlife and, through this project, important habitats for species can be maintained and enhanced.

Over the last 40 years in the Vale, farming has become more intense and urban areas have expanded. As a result, areas such as woodlands, hedgerows and ponds have been significantly reduced.

Small areas within schools and land owned by community/town councils provide safe havens for many plants and animals and it is important that they are protected.

Cllr Gwyn John, Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure, said: "Creating a wildlife area is a great way to get lots of people involved in nature conservation, not only helping wildlife but also having fun at the same time."
