Oxygen therapy units for Vale leisure centres

New equipment which might be needed in a medical emergency has been installed at Vale of Glamorgan Council leisure centres.

Two oxygen therapy units are now available at each of the centres at Barry, Cowbridge, Llantwit Major and Penarth and complement the automated external defibrillators provided last year.

The basic life support equipment can be used in conjunction with the defibrillators should cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) be required. Alternatively, the new units may be used for other ailments such as therapy or for pain relief.

Key leisure centre personnel have undertaken relevant training courses to ensure they are aware of how to administer the oxygen in conjunction with other safety measures.

Cabinet Member for Leisure and Tourism Cllr Gwyn John said: “Health and safety is, of course, a priority for us, and we are pleased that further measures have been installed to ensure the continued safety of our customers."

Leisure Services Manager Jamie Morgans said: “We hope that the team never has occasion to use the new equipment but hope it is reassuring for the community to learn that more lifesaving equipment has been installed and further training has taken place across our main sites.”
