Up, up and away with St Nick’s Air!

Staff and pupils at St Nicholas Church in Wales Primary School
responded to the recent dreadful weather by building their own
aeroplane to jet off in search of the summer sun!
St Nick’s Air is up and running, and class
teacher Hannah Gibbs explained: “Our topic, before we broke up for
the holidays, was journeys and travel and, as we’ve always been a
school interested in the environment, we decided to combine the two
and make our own plane from scrap.”
And, as they start their holidays with a
possible air trip, reception or year 1 pupils will surely be
reflecting on their great efforts.
Hannah used an old bed sheet to make the body
of the plane, and the children let their imaginations run wild to
kit out the plane; with one condition, junk materials only to be
used.
Hannah added: “Their attention to detail was
really impressive. The travelling teddies had oxygen masks made
from old yoghurt pots and life jackets made from bubble wrap! We
had fun and it reinforced a valuable message for them too 13
there’s lots of materials we can reuse.”
Support for the project came from the Vale of
Glamorgan Council's "What’s in Your Bin?" waste awareness project.
Sam Harrison, council waste awareness officer, explained: “The St
Nicholas aeroplane was impressive for a number of reasons. The
children enjoyed making it, which is always important, and it
reinforced the idea that a lot of what we throw away is useful.
It’s far better to reuse something first, and then to recycle it
afterwards. Well done to all involved.”
