Vale in Tandem
The Vale of Glamorgan Council is offering a new cycling scheme
called ‘Vale in Tandem’. Managed by the Council’s Active for Life
team the scheme offers cyclists the chance to ride in an organised
group led by an experienced leader.
The cycle routes, around Barry and Penarth, are up to 7 miles /
11 km long and are described as scenic with minimal traffic.
Safety is an important part of the scheme and it operates with
no more than four cyclists to one cycle leader. Those interested in
taking part can borrow a bike, helmet and other safety equipment
for their cycling session.
As well as providing some cycling fun the scheme has been
designed to improve physical activity levels and to help prevent
heart disease. The team suggest that participants should sign-up to
the Active for Life 12-week fitness programme, but they would also
like to hear from novice cyclists, those with little road cycling
confidence and adults who would like to cycle more safely.
The Vale of Glamorgan Council’s cabinet member for leisure and
tourism, Coun Gwyn John said: “Participants are offered a wide
choice - they can now opt for cycling as well as ‘Valeways’ walking
or LifeStyle Health and Fitness, which provides a gym, exercise
classes and swimming - all are designed to get you more active more
often.”
Jamie Lane, one of the Active for Life coordinators and a cycle
leader, explained: “Vale in Tandem adheres to the different levels
of the National Standard of cycling guidelines; the public can be
reassured that they can cycle safely, feel motivated and experience
the great outdoors!”
Vale in Tandem work with the Welsh Assembly Government, Sports
Council for Wales and the Vale of Glamorgan Council and are based
at Barry Leisure Centre.
