The Vale of Glamorgan Council is set to invest £720,000 on improving its roads network in the coming year.

With the support of a £582,000 grant from the Welsh Assembly Government, the council has identified the following areas for improvements:

Road resurfacing - Llantwit Major by-pass (Boverton traffic lights), St Bride's Major (junction with Southerndown Road to cattle grid), Wick to Llantwit road (junction with Llan Road to Croes Heol y Sblot), Llantwit to Barry road (War Memorial to filling station), Llantwit to Cowbridge road (Enterprise Business Park to Siginstone junction), Five-Mile Lane (Blackland Farm to Amelia Trust), Port Road, Barry (Tesco traffic lights to speed camera), Cog Road, Sully (junction with South Road to junction with Sully Road), Culverhouse Cross (middle lane approach to traffic lights) and A48 to Peterston-super-Ely (Pendoylan junction to Gwern Steeple).

Surface dressing - Byrd Crescent, Dowland Road and Purcell Road, Penarth; Belmont Street, Glencoe Street, Port Road East, Warwick Way, Gloucester Close and St Teilo's Avenue, Barry; Whiteways, Georgian Close, Regency Close and Bedford Rise, Llantwit; Darren Close and Porth y Green Close, Cowbridge; Mallory Close and Scott Close, St Athan; St Bride's Road, Ewenny (junction with Kingswood Close to river bridge); St Bride's Major to Wick road (near junction with Heol Las to lay-by at Pant-y-Groes Lodge); Five-Mile Lane (Weycock Cross roundabout to hawking centre), Barry to Llantwit road (between Weycock Cross and airport roundabouts); Port Road, Wenvoe (between HTV and Alps roundabouts) and Llantwit to Wick Road (junction with Llan Road to Wick).

Cllr Rob Curtis, Cabinet Member for Visible Services, said: “As well as improving the quality of the roads and, of course, driving conditions, there will be a reduction in road noise. I am sure the work will be welcomed by both residents and visitors."

Operational Manager (Highway Maintenance) Keith Jones said the additional Assembly funding, which was part of a £15m annual allocation being shared by all Welsh councils to address the issue of deteriorating roads, followed a national study. He added: "The council will be carrying out the works during the coming months using specialist external contractors.”
