Clive Road steps link re-opens
An important pedestrian route linking Barry Island with the
ongoing redevelopment of Barry Docks has reopened for public
use.
The work on the Clive Road Steps was undertaken on Associated
British Ports land and funded by both the Welsh Assembly Government
and the Vale of Glamorgan Council.
Work has included site clearance, and new steel staircase,
lighting and signage.
Council Leader Cllr Margaret Alexander said: “I am very pleased
that this important link between the Island and the Waterfront will
once again be able to be used by local people.
"The steps form an important link from the Island to the town
and I congratulate the residents for their determination to ensure
that they were replaced."
Vale AM Jane Hutt, said: "I am delighted that the Clive Road
steps are back in public use. This is the culmination of over three
years of work of a partnership involving the Welsh Development
Agency, which is now part of the Assembly, the Vale Council,
Associated British Ports and the Barry Island Residents'
Association, and has been made possible with the help of
approximately £70k of Assembly funding."
Expressing their delight, local ward members Steffan Wiliam and
Nic Hodges paid tribute to the efforts of everyone involved.
Cllr Wiliam, who represents the Baruc Ward, which includes the
Island, said: “These steps owe their existence to the determined
campaign led by Island residents together with the support of their
local councillors and the Assembly Member.”
Fellow Baruc Ward councillor Nic Hodges said: “The steps will
serve to remind us what can be achieved when people work
together.”
Callum Couper, of ABP, said he was very pleased the link was
back in use as a result of a collaborative effort between ABP, the
council and the Welsh Assembly.
