Partnership recycling project makes excellent progress

Excellent progress is being made on a Vale of Glamorgan-based project which will lead to the recycling of waste material from highways gullies.

The Vale Council, the City and County of Cardiff and Bridgend County Borough Council are working in partnership for the first time in their history on the development of the reed bed filtration facility which is due for completion in August.

Vale Council Operational Manager (Highways) Keith Jones said the £160,000 facility, which has been approved by the Environment Agency, will be one of just a few across the country. It is being developed at Pant y Lladron, near St Hilary.

As a by product, clean water will be produced and then be available for use for gully cleansing, while soil and other solid waste materials will be also be recycled.

Currently, the waste is taken to landfill, and the new facility is viewed by the three authorities as a sustainable solution to the problem.
