Panel awards record amount to Vale sports clubs and organisations

Vale of Glamorgan-based community sports clubs and organisations are celebrating a special funding package of more than £15,300.

The monies, including seven maximum awards of £1,000, have been agreed as part of the Community Chest initiative, which is run in partnership by the Sports Council for Wales and the Vale Council Sports, Arts and Play Development Team.

Helping organisations to develop and improve participation opportunities and performance standards, grants are used to purchase equipment, develop coaches, promote and market club activities and establish new junior sections.

Receiving £1,000 are:

• Barry Basketball Club (to help with hall hire, coach education and purchase of equipment to offer training opportunities to under-18s);

• Barry Tae Kwon Do (improving coaching standards and purchasing equipment to, ultimately, offer more opportunities);

• The Business Centre at Ty Verlon Industrial Estate, Barry (to purchase equipment, including bicycles, to offer fitness opportunities for employees);

• Elim New Life Church, Barry (for coach education and equipment to offer football opportunities to young people);

• Glamorgan Federation of Women's Institutes (to introduce croquet through taster sessions to members at Dyffryn Gardens), and

• Penarth Mini/Junior Rugby and Penarth Town AFC (coach education).

Four Vale bowls clubs will also benefit from the latest round of awards: Llantwit Major (£832 to improve and publicise adult recruitment programme, junior development, coach education, purchase equipment); Barry Romilly (£990 to introduce bowls to young people, educating coaches, buying equipment and assisting with marketing); Barry Central (£960 to expand junior membership, prioritise coach education, publicity and additional equipment) and Cadoxton (£640 to expand junior membership through coach education and purchase of necessary equipment).

Also offering bowls opportunities are Llansannor Community Hall Association, near Cowbridge, and Llantwit Major Comprehensive School who have been allocated £820 and £990 respectively to purchase equipment.

The Hensol-based Vale Squash Club has been awarded £986.98 to encourage more junior members through coach education and the purchase of equipment.

Porthkerry Country Park in Barry has been awarded £750 to offer orienteering and nature walking opportunities. The funds will assist with the production of maps and publicity, with the team keen to link in with local schools as part of an education programme.

Wishing to encourage more female participants, Barry Athletic Tennis Club has been awarded £430 for taster sessions, publicity and the purchase of equipment.

The panel meets again on Thursday, July 19, with a deadline for the submission of applications of Friday, July 6.

Vale Sports, Arts and Play Development Manager Karen Davies said: "The panel will reconvene after a summer break in September and would welcome plenty of applications for its consideration.”

"All Vale organisations committed to the development of new or improved sport and physical activity opportunities can apply. There’s still plenty of money, some £38,000 until March next year, to be allocated from the proverbial pot of gold."
