Vale Council review community recycling sites
The Vale of Glamorgan Council is warning that it may have to
close some of its community recycling sites due to problems with
flytipping.
The Council provides 47 sites for residents to recycle a range
of materials but some of them are being misused.
Operational Manager for Waste Management Clifford Parish
explained: “We are currently reviewing all of our community
recycling sites as we are having to clean some of them on a daily
basis due to people leaving rubbish and non-recyclable materials
behind. In addition to being a waste of council tax payers’ money,
it isn’t fair on those who use the facilities properly or the site
owners.
"In addition to general rubbish, we are finding large amounts of
cardboard at the sites. We do not provide recycling banks for
cardboard as these are open to mis-use by businesses who have to
pay for waste disposal and recycling but we do provide a free
kerbside collection for residents so would urge everyone to use
this.
"We appreciate that some residents prefer to use recycling banks
rather than our kerbside service but, if the problems persist, we
will have no option but to close some sites”
The most problematic sites include: Tesco and the Cliff Top,
Penarth; Tesco, Culverhouse Cross, and Morrisons and Gladstone Road
in Barry.
Council enforcement officers will be carrying out regular checks
from now on, and anyone found to be dumping rubbish could face a
£75 fine. Signs are being installed to remind users of this.
The council provides a free kerbside recycling collection for
paper, glass, cans, plastic, cardboard and garden waste.
