Primary schools get in the swing!
Primary school pupils in Barry are getting into the swing of
golf as part of a new Vale of Glamorgan Council initiative.
Working in partnership with Brynhill (Barry) Golf Club
professional Duncan Prior, Dragon Sport in the Vale is offering
taster sessions to youngsters, with 28 pupils at High Street school
being the first to benefit. The initiative will also be rolled out
at Palmerston and Colcot schools.
Golf sessions, which are already delivered at Victoria School,
Penarth, is the newest game in the Dragon Sport portfolio and, at
the outset, youngsters use special plastic clubs to develop their
driving, chipping and putting skills.
Dragon Sport assistant Pete Hardwick said: “The first session
proved to be a huge success, with pupils sampling the delights of
the game. The sport can be played by all ages, it’s social and it
puts you at one with nature. In time, players can learn to
challenge themselves against courses of all kinds."
Duncan and assistants will run free daily Dragon Sport golf
sessions at Brynhill from May 28-June 1, with youngsters wishing to
continue their interest being given the opportunity to attend
reasonably priced Saturday morning sessions of ‘real golf’ from
June 2.
Dragon Sport is a national initiative set up by the Sports
Council of Wales in conjunction with every local authority in
Wales. It offers eight identified sports, of which golf is the
newest. Also focussing on athletics, cricket, football, hockey,
netball, rugby and tennis, the initiative aims to encourage more
seven to 11 year olds to participate in sporting activities and
promote fair play.
