‘Plastic Fantastic’ project at Barry primary school

Staff and pupils at a Barry school are showing just how much they care about their environment.

A first Eco Day at Holton primary celebrated the school's achievement of a bronze award in the national Eco-Schools green scheme and the launch of a new ‘Plastic Fantastic’ project. The project is a popular addition to the recycling schemes already running in the school.

Organised with support from the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s ‘What’s in your bin?’ campaign, the special day was given a big green thumbs up. Pupils turned eco detectives to see just how much is thrown away and how, using reusable containers for lunch and composting, they can combat this rubbish mountain.

Driving forces behind the green theme are headteacher Andrew Gilbert, teachers Mel Brown, Sally Ackerman and Jane Griffiths, and learning support assistant Tracey Hopkins. Sally and Tracey were the brains behind producing a rubbish mountain on the school stage to show pupils what gets thrown away daily.

Sally explained: “We wanted our day to be positive and to focus on how we can all do simple things that really help like making sure we compost our food waste. Pupils on the Eco Committee were sensational and used their enthusiasm to get the other pupils interested. I was really proud of them.”

Awareness-raising events included class discussions, making models with items destined for the bin and competitions.

Parents were also involved in preparing waste free healthy lunches, while dressing in green for the day was really popular, with some pupils sporting, for one-day only, green hair!

Vale council waste awareness officer Sam Harrison, who gave some special rubbish-themed assemblies focusing on how we can all reduce, reuse and recycle, said: “I was delighted to work with Emily, Joseph, Ceri, Jack, Kameron, Owain, Nico-Pele, Aimee and Josie from the Eco Committee. They put so much hard work into making Holton Primary School’s Eco Day a success.”
