Call goes out for more Vale foster carers
Foster caring can make a great career. That is the message from
the Vale of Glamorgan Council as it tries to increase the number of
foster carers in the county.
Fostering means looking after a child or young person in your
home and caring for them while their own parents are unable to. It
is different from adoption - when carers become a child’s legal
parents.
People take up foster caring for a number of reasons; this may
be from a sheer love of caring for children to wanting a career
working with children.
There are several types of foster care. Carers may be long-term
foster carers, looking after a child for several years or
short-term carers. Some carers go on to specialise as emergency
carers or as mother and baby foster carers.
Vale council interim director for social services, Mark Wheeler,
said, “The council currently has 83 foster care families. Many have
worked with us for years and taken care of many children -
youngsters who can be at the lowest point of their young lives.
“One care family has fostered for us for 41 years. I think that
says it all - fostering offers real job satisfaction. We need more
foster carers and we look forward to hearing from potential
carers.”
