Forum survey residents on domestic abuse

Forum survey residents on domestic abuse

A survey conducted in Barry has highlighted a lack of knowledge of who to contact in the event of an incident of domestic abuse.

Undertaken by the Safer Vale Domestic Abuse Forum, the survey involved the completion of questionnaires by 133 people on King Square and at the Vale of Glamorgan Council's County Library.

The Domestic Abuse Forum comprises representatives from the Vale Council, Police, Women's Aid, health services, probation, the courts and a range of statutory and voluntary bodies that deal with abuse and its consequences.

Offering help, support and assistance were representatives of Women’s Aid, Cymdeithas Tai Hafan, Victim Support and the Vale council.

The questionnaires revealed that of those surveyed:

• 47 per cent were unaware who to contact in the event of involvement in domestic abuse

• 95 per cent agreed that domestic abuse was totally unacceptable

• 53 per cent felt domestic abuse was increasing

• 59 per cent knew someone who had been involved in a domestic abuse incident

Wales has an excellent 24-hour Domestic Abuse helpline and anyone needing assistance can call 0808 80 10 800.
