Further success for the ‘Visible Crew’

The Vale of Glamorgan Council's 'Visible Crew' initiative has continued its work to clean up the Vale by returning a Barry resident's flood-damaged garden to its former glory.

Miss Gwen Fairfax's garden in Redberth Close had been damaged by recent flooding, and members of the Visible Crew spent a day clearing away debris. Miss Fairfax's niece, Mrs Smart, said: "The work that the young men did made such a difference, and we fully appreciate the help we received.”

Miles Punter, Head of Visible Services, said: “The Visible Crew mobile team work throughout the Vale, providing valuable assistance to our residents with environmental problems that fall outside the normal responsibilities of my waste management and cleansing services. They were more than happy to help improve the appearance of the garden, with ground clearance work that would otherwise have fallen outside the assistance that we could have provided.”

This private land would normally fall outside the responsibility of the council to clear. A group of Visible Crew members from the probation service worked through the day to remove illegally fly-tipped waste that had blighted the area for several years.

Launched in May 2007, the Visible Crew initiative brings together representatives from the youth offending service, probation service, police, fire service and the council’s waste enforcement team who work in partnership with local communities to improve the local environment.

Councillor Rob Curtis, Vale Council cabinet member for visible services, said: “The aim of the Visible Crew is to provide, through working closely in partnership with other public services, a clean and safe environment for residents. The Visible Crew vehicle can now be seen daily working around the Vale, tackling environmental issues that the council wouldn't be able to undertake within its normal service provision."
