Please help save our post offices
"Please help save our post offices" is the rallying call to
residents from the Vale of Glamorgan Council.
During a visit to the post office at Pill Street, Penarth, which
is one of three in the Vale threatened with closure, council leader
Cllr Margaret Alexander and cabinet member Cllr Nigel Gibbs urged
local people to sign protest petitions.
The petitions are available at the threatened post offices at
Pill Street, High Street in Barry and Treoes, the council's Civic
Offices, Provincial House and Dock Offices in Barry, West House,
Penarth, libraries at Barry, Penarth, Cowbridge and Llantwit Major,
and other retail outlets.
You can voice your concerns, outlining what your local post
office means to you, at www.valeofglamorgan.gov.uk/postoffices.
You can also sign the online petition to add your name to the
thousands already gathered at the post offices themselves.
Cllr Gibbs represents the ward, along with Cllr Rhiannon Birch,
in which the Pill Street post office is situated. He said: "The
closure of the Pill Street post office would be a huge blow for the
local community. We hope that commonsense prevails and our post
office remains open.
"We will do everything we can to keep this post office open.
There is overwhelming evidence that the majority of residents are
opposed to these plans. They are flawed and certainly don’t
consider the needs of vulnerable people such as the elderly and
disabled."
Cllr Alexander said that she and her cabinet colleagues were
"totally opposed" to the proposed closures.
Urging people to sign the petitions, Cllr Alexander said: "There
is almost unanimous opposition to these closures from the public
and councils, and the more people who register their views, the
better chance we have of halting these damaging proposals.
"The council needs to stand alongside local people and local
communities on issues such as the threat to the future of our post
offices. I'm sure we can make a difference."
