Vale Business Club in sporting mood

Expert tips on taking commercial advantage of high profile sporting events provided the focus for the Vale Business Club at its latest meeting.

More than 50 members of the club, which was founded by the Vale of Glamorgan Council, and guests leapt at the chance to attend the interesting and potentially lucrative networking opportunity.

The speakers were Professor Brian Morgan, director of the Creative Leadership and Enterprise Centre at UWIC’s School of Management, and Rob Holt, of Ryder Cup Wales 2010, two of Wales' leading business specialists. They referred, in particular, to the 2010 Ryder Cup and, on a national level, the Olympics. Also covered were the recent Rugby World Cup and other major sporting events that Wales regularly attracts.

The Vale Business Club events are held every other month and allow members and guests to meet new business contacts, gain relevant business knowledge and promote their companies and services.

Phillip Ellis, business manager at Business in Focus, a leading business support agency in South Wales and a Vale club sponsor, said: “The Olympics are expected to generate over £800 million of indirect business opportunities across the UK, on top of the obvious infrastructure opportunities, with tourism, supply, etc.

"Wales and its small and medium enterprises have a lot to offer visitors and participants in these major events, and events like this can ensure they create and maximise opportunities."

"It’s down to us all to lure these visitors to our area and provide memorable products, services and experiences that will bring them, and others, back to Wales. The advice given by Rob and Brian was very relevant.”

Vale council economic development manager Bob Guy, who thanked HSBC Bank and Business in Focus for their ongoing sponsorship and support fo the club, said: “There was a very positive feedback from our event and the news of this potential £800 million bonanza.

"We wish our members every success in applying what they’ve learned and taking advantage of these opportunities."

The next Vale Business Club event is the Christmas luncheon at the West House Country Hotel at Llantwit Major (CF61 1SP for satnav users) on 13 December.
