Vigil marks International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

A 15-minute silent vigil was held in Kings Square, Barry, on Saturday 24 November to mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Vale of Glamorgan Council leader, Margaret Alexander, who organised the vigil, said: “In the Vale of Glamorgan, domestic violence is the fastest growing crime and the least reported. Domestic abuse is a scourge of societies around the world and can involve all members of a family. Shockingly, children witness 90 per cent of all domestic abuse incidents."

Cllr Alexander added: "It was good to see members from all political parties on the Vale of Glamorgan Council and Barry Town Council joining together with members of the public and Assembly Member Jane Hutt for the silent vigil. Violence against women is a global problem of epidemic proportions and all those present vowed never to condone it in any shape or form, and wherever it might occur."

Representatives from organisations in the Vale including the Domestic Abuse Forum and Women’s Voice supported the vigil and advice was available on the day about where to find help to deal with domestic abuse. There was also a collection for Women’s Aid, with all money raised going towards Christmas celebrations for children who will be staying with their mothers in refuges and safe houses during the festive season.

The day is also known as ‘White Ribbon Day’ and white ribbons were given out at the vigil. The day’s official date is 25 November and the vigil in Barry was one of many events to raise awareness around the world.
