Vale council welcomes all-Wales report on services

An all-Wales local government report has highlighted the excellent progress being maintained by the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

The Local Government Data Unit (Wales) report reveals the Vale as just one of two authorities with a 100 per cent record in dealing with fly tipping incidents within five days of them being reported. The Vale has achieved a similar 100 per cent mark, alongside a number of other councils, in relation to the number of households covered by a kerbside recycling collection service (Welsh average 87 per cent) and the number of food hygiene and health and safety inspections of "high risk" premises.

The Vale, the report reveals, takes only one day - and is the top performing authority - in relation to time taken to repair street lamps. The Welsh average is 4.8 days.

Welcoming the report, deputy leader Cllr Neil Moore, the cabinet member for finance, said: "According to an unofficial league table compiled by the 'Western Mail,' the Vale is joint third of Wales' 22 local authorities. The council cabinet, working with its staff, will seek to ensure that the Vale remains among the top performing councils in Wales.

"All council directorates and our workforce should be congratulated for the great deal of excellent work they are undertaking in particularly challenging times for local government. They are delivering services that are, in many cases, well above the Welsh average.

"We appreciate that there are a number of areas of concern, and our officers will be looking at ways of addressing problems."

The performance of the Vale in other areas (with Welsh averages in brackets) includes:

• the proportion of waste recycled was 22.49 per cent (17.9)

• children achieving level 4 or above at Key Stage 2 in core curriculum subjects was 79 per cent (74)

• 95.1 per cent of roads and public spaces of an acceptable level of cleanliness (97.09)

• 91.39 per cent pupil attendance at secondary schools (90.1 per cent)

• proportion of 16 year olds leaving school with no qualifications was 1.07 per cent (2.1)

• average time taken to deliver a disabled facilities grant was 617 days (545)
