Fair trade in the Vale of Glamorgan

Fair trade in the Vale of Glamorgan

The Vale of Glamorgan Council is currently working towards gaining Fair Trade County status ready for Fair Trade Fortnight in February 2008.

Fair trade products have been promoted in the council's civic offices in Barry as part of an internal sustainable development fair, with staff and visitors able to purchase from a range of fair-trade goods such as biscuits, coffee, tea, cotton wool and t-shirts.

The council already serve fair-trade tea and coffee at corporate functions, and visitors to Dyffryn Gardens can also purchase these at the new visitors centre café.

Cllr Rob Curtis, Cabinet Member for Visible Services, said: “I am really pleased that the staff at the council have taken on board the idea of fair trade, and I am sure that the Vale will achieve fair trade county status next year.”

Several local town and community councils in the Vale are also working towards gaining fair trade status. The first to achieve this was Penarth, with Barry, Cowbridge and Llantwit Major hoping to apply within the next six months.

A directory of businesses stocking fair trade products will also soon be available on this website.
