Moving home? Move your vote
The Vale of Glamorgan Council is reminding people to take their
vote with them when they move house.
Research from the Electoral Commission has found that people who
move house tend to forget to register at their new address, leaving
them without a vote at election time.
All households will have recently received an electoral
registration form in the post as part of the annual canvass, when
local authorities contact people living in their area in order to
update the electoral register. However, those moving home may not
have received this form at their new address or it may have been
filled in and returned by previous occupants.
Anyone who has moved house is, therefore, urged to contact the
electoral registration office at the Vale.
Vale Electoral Registration Officer Steve Bartlett said: “You’ve
told your friends, you’ve met the neighbours and you’ve found the
local takeaway but do you have a say in how the area is run? It’s
easy to forget to register to vote at your new address, but don’t
let moving home mean losing your vote.
"Registering to vote is very simple. Either contact the Vale of
Glamorgan Registration Office on 01446 709748 or visit www.aboutmyvote.co.uk to get
all you need - a downloadable registration form and our
contact details. Once you’ve filled in the form, make sure you send
it to us as soon as possible to secure your vote.”
Kay Jenkins, Head of Office Wales for the Electoral Commission,
said: “We recognise that moving house is a busy time with lots to
think about, but an election could be called at any time so we
would urge homemovers to push electoral registration further up
their to-do lists to safeguard their vote.”
