Youngsters rise to reading challenge

As part of their summer activities, the Vale of Glamorgan Council library service inspired youngsters to read their way through the holidays and earn new trees for UK woods.

The Big Wild Read was the ninth national Summer Reading Challenge, a massive reading promotion for four to 12 year olds taking in libraries throughout the summer holidays. Children's librarian Gillian Southby said: "Youngsters were challenged to read six or more books, spurred on by an exciting range of free incentives and activities."

As well as getting a medal, all the children completing the Big Wild Read were also invited to a certificate presentation by Vale of Glamorgan Mayor Cllr Clive Williams and the Mayoress, his wife, Gwyneth, at the County Library in Barry.

The event included entertainment by Russell from Pick “N” Mix Circus.
