Recycled pallets result in great play area

The Vale of Glamorgan Council has praised the efforts of a Barry man who has transformed his garden into a wonderful play area for his children by recycling old wooden pallets.

Nigel Richardson, who has four children aged between and four and 14, has built them a castle complete with electricity, laminated flooring, tables, chairs and hanging baskets and a boat complete with mast and sails, and all from unwanted wooden pallets. He has also built family dog Dora a new kennel and is currently working on a fort.

Son Matthew, age nine, said: "The things dad has built for us are wicked. He is very clever.”

Nigel collects the pallets, free of charge, with permission, from various sources including skip and building merchants. He got the idea of recycling them from brother Carl who used old pallets to build a fence in his garden.

Carl said: “My garden is 30ft long and, by using pallets salvaged from various places, I was able to fence the side perimeter for just £30. Not only did I save money, but I was able to recycle materials that other people didn’t want.”

Vale council waste awareness officer Helen Ball said: “This is a great example of re-using materials that could otherwise have ended up in landfill.”
