Vale Council rolls out advanced safety alarm system
The Vale of Glamorgan Council is rolling out an advanced safety alarm system.
Known as TeleV, the initiative is aimed at helping elderly and vulnerable people to remain in their own homes and to live independently for as long as possible.
Designed to work with existing Lifeline home units and in sheltered housing settings, the new Telecare "smart" alarm technology comprises a range of more than 20 non intrusive sensors which can be installed on a flexible basis to meet individual needs.
The basic TeleV package consists of a Lifeline control unit, two smoke detectors and an extreme temperature detector, while there is a TeleVPlus package including devices more closely linked to meeting a person’s individual care needs, eg, falls detector and epilepsy sensor.
Alongside the council's existing community alarm system, TeleV will provide a 24 hours day telephone link between the home and a control centre.
A range of speakers at a launch and information day at The YMCA Hub described the use of Telecare to manage falls in older people, to help promote the independence of people with learning disabilities, to manage long-term conditions and to improve the quality of life of people with dementia.
Vale Council leader Cllr Margaret Alexander said: "This important event gave a clear indication of the support the council is giving to the introduction and establishment of Telecare in the Vale.
"Telecare involves the use of services which will help more and more people to live safely, securely and comfortably in their homes and, hopefully, avoid admission into care or hospital.
"It offers a wide range of options to help manage risks in the home environment and, most importantly, to try and help people maintain their independence."
