Launch of Vale of Glamorgan County Treasures

A major project highlighting the area's many historic assets has been launched by the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

The Vale of Glamorgan County Treasures, which lists more than 1,200 buildings of architectural/historic merit, archaeological remains, buildings, structures and groups of buildings recognised as being of importance and designated parks and gardens was launched by cabinet member for planning and transportation Cllr Chris Williams.

The survey commenced in 2002 through the support of local communities and voluntary investigators, and has been undertaken in partnership with the Penarth Civic Society, local voluntary organisations, and town and community councils.

It has been subject to generous financial support from Cadw, Welsh Historic Monuments, the Civic Trust for Wales, the Vale Council for Voluntary Services and the Heritage Lottery Fund. The launch coincided with a European Heritage open day at Dyffryn House.

It is intended that the council will periodically review the contents of County Treasures and, during a review, candidate treasures can be put forward by the public.

Cllr Williams said: “I am delighted that, after several years of hard work and research, the Vale of Glamorgan County Treasures is publicly available."
