Barry community centre celebrates opening of new room

Facilities available for public use at a Barry community centre have been boosted by the official opening of a new room.

Funded via the Welsh Assembly Government’s ‘Active Lifestyles Programme' and managed by the Sports Council for Wales, the room at the Vale of Glamorgan Council-owned St Nicholas Community Centre was officially unveiled by Vale Mayor Cllr Clive Williams.

Cllr Williams expressed his delight at seeing "a wonderful community project come to fruition" and, after cutting a ceremonial ribbon, enjoyed a buffet lunch kindly provided by the ladies of the St Nicholas Community Association.

Among the other guests at the lunchtime ceremony were Neil Emberton, from the Sports Council of Wales, Mary Thomas, association chair, and Vale cabinet member for tourism and leisure Cllr Gwyn John.

Praising association treasurer Mair Durbin for managing the project from inception through to launch, Cllr John said: “A lot of hard work has gone into providing this impressive additional facility at the centre."

The opening ceremony included a ballet display by 11 year olds Alannah Goss and Rochelle Davies whose charming performance illustrated how the new basement room could be used. Allanah and Rochelle, who attend the Nicola Peros School of Dance at the centre, have both attained distinctions at Grade 5 in Royal Academy examinations.

The impressive centre basement room, which has its own entrance and toilet facility to make it an ideal space for small groups, is now available for hire at just £4 per hour. Mrs Thomas said: "The room gives groups, covering such activities as yoga, pilates, dance, conditioning exercises, aerobics, boccia and martial arts, an alternative and affordable option to the existing main hall and stage area. This will ultimately benefit the community who can, hopefully, enjoy even more activities on their doorstep."
