Cardiff Blues give Vale Council’s green scheme a lift!
Members of the Cardiff Blues rugby team gave the Vale of
Glamorgan Council's garden waste service a real lift recently when
the players who live in the county agreed to use it.
The service provides residents with a fortnightly kerbside
collection for garden waste and Cardiff Blues back row forward Mark
Lewis, who lives in Penarth, has given it his full support. He
said: “We can all do our bit for the environment by using local
recycling services and it’s good to know that all garden waste
collected in the Vale is being composted locally and not ending up
buried in a landfill site.”
The response so far from residents has been incredible, with
over 44,000 re-useable bags being sold since the service was
launched in April – resulting in over 600 tonnes of garden waste
being collected. This is the equivalent in weight of 600 average
Vale households not putting out any rubbish at all for a whole
year!
Complimenting residents for helping to tackle the issue of
garden waste, Head of Visible Services, Miles Punter said: “We are
delighted to see so much support for the kerbside service and
hopefully, with the backing of our local Blues players, even more
people will give the service a ‘try’!"
If you haven’t used the service yet, it’s really easy. Just buy
bags from one of the offices listed below and place them out on the
same day as the council collects your cardboard and plastic for
recycling. Please remember that your garden waste and recycling
must be placed out by 7am on your collection day.
Reusable and biodegradable bags can be bought from the Vale
Council offices in Barry (Civic and the Docks), The Alps in Wenvoe,
Penarth, Llantwit Major and Cowbridge. The biodegradable bags are
priced at three for £1 and the re-usable bags are £1 each.
All garden waste collected in the Vale is taken to a local farm
where it is composted. This compost is then used on the farm,
providing an environmentally method of waste disposal.
