Don’t get caught out make sure you are on the electoral register
Residents in the Vale of Glamorgan are being urged to safeguard
their vote at election time by registering this autumn.
The plea comes at the start of the annual canvass, when local
authorities in Great Britain deliver electoral registration forms
to all households. It also comes at a time of increased speculation
of a possible General Election. To vote in an election, eligible
electors must be on the electoral roll.
All households in the area will have received a letter from the
Vale of Glamorgan Council containing the annual canvass form. It
will list all the people currently on the electoral register for
the address. Electors are asked to simply add anyone who should be
registered and isn’t on the list and cross out anyone who no longer
lives at the address. The form should be signed and returned to the
council as soon as possible.
Vale Electoral Registration Officer Steve Bartlett said: “The
reality is an election can be called at any time. If you aren’t on
the electoral roll, you will miss out on the chance to have your
say on how the country is run or how services are provided in the
Vale.
"Registering to vote is very simple. Fill in the form that will
have come through your door or contact the council if you haven’t
received one.
"Once you’ve filled in the form, make sure you send it to us as
soon as possible to secure your vote," added Mr Bartlett.
Andrew Scallan, Director of Electoral Administration at the
Electoral Commission, added: “Registering to vote is quick and
easy. It is the only way of making sure you have a vote at election
time 13 you aren’t automatically registered if you pay council tax
for instance or if you have registered previously. The Commission
would like to urge the people of the Vale to spare a few minutes
this autumn to secure their vote.”
