Scheme's success results in complete sell out
The Vale of Glamorgan Council’s kerbside garden waste
collection service has proved such a big hit with residents that
all 48,000 re-useable bags bought for use with the service have now
been sold.
In addition, 21,724 biodegradable bags have also been sold since
the service was launched in April, resulting in 1,260 tonnes of
garden waste being collected from residents for composting in just
five and a half months. This is equivalent in weight to 1,260
average Vale households not putting out any rubbish for a whole
year!
Head of Visible Services Miles Punter said: “We could not have
asked for a better response to our garden waste service from
residents and we have been surprised at how quickly the bags have
sold out.
"We bought as many bags as we thought necessary and had
anticipated that this supply would last for the whole year. We
would like to apologise to anyone who was hoping to buy re-useable
bags this year. These will be available from March 2008.
"We still have plenty of biodegradable bags left so, anyone who
wants to, can still use the service.”
Residents are reminded that fortnightly kerbside collections for
garden waste will stop on November 2 when the council will revert
to a ‘ring and request’ collection service until 31 March, 2008.
Please call on 029 2067 3000 to arrange a collection during this
time.
Biodegradable bags can be bought from the council offices in
Cowbridge, Llantiwt Major, Barry (Civic and The Docks), The Alps,
Wenvoe, and Penarth priced three for £1.
Garden waste can also be composted at home. Discounted compost
bins are available to all Vale residents priced from £10. Please
call 01884 841 515 for details.
