You’re never too young to start composting

You're never too young to start composting

A young Vale resident is urging everyone to have a go at home composting to help reduce the amount of rubbish they throw away.

Ten-year-old Nathan Petch, of Barry, has been helping mum Mandy to compost all their organic waste for the past four years. All fruit and vegetable waste from their kitchen goes into their bin along with tea bags, egg shells, garden waste and small amounts of cardboard.

Nathan said: “I encouraged mum to buy us a compost bin as I enjoyed helping my gramps and grandma with their gardening and composting. I showed her what to put in it and now we make great compost. It’s really easy too; everyone should give it a go.”

Mum Mandy said: “It’s amazing what a difference composting has made to the amount of rubbish we throw away. It's also great as we can use our own compost to grow flowers which saves money. You don’t need lots of room to do it either. We live in a terrace and have a small garden.”

Up to 30 per cent of an average household bin can be composted including uncooked fruit and vegetable waste, tea bags and coffee grounds, egg shells and cardboard egg boxes, small amounts of paper and cardboard, grass cuttings, hedge and shrub clippings, old plants and flowers.

Discounted compost bins are available to all Vale residents priced from £10. Please call 01884 841 515 for details.
