Improved loos for popular Barry beach

Improved loos for popular Barry beach

People visiting Barry’s popular Jackson’s Bay beach next summer will find a trip to the loo a more pleasant experience thanks to a major refurbishment project by the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

The public toilets, which are situated below the surf lifesavers' building close to the entrance to the beach, have been completely revamped and many of the improvements are the direct result of consultation with users.

Smart new wall tiles and a new floor have been installed to make the toilets brighter and easier to clean. They also have environmentally friendly features including increased natural lighting and ventilation and electric lights that only come on when the toilets are in use. Waterless urinals are being trialled in the gents to reduce water usage, and both toilets now have baby changing facilities.

The refurbishment is part of a rolling programme which will see all public toilets in the Vale being modernised.

Cabinet member for visible services Cllr Rob Curtis said: “Jackson’s Bay is hugely popular with both Barry residents and tourists, and many visitors to the beach had requested that we improve the toilet facilities. We hope everyone will appreciate the improvements made by the council.”

John Davies, the council’s commercial manager, added: “We have taken on board comments from our customers and, in addition to redecorating the toilets, we have introduced mirrors and soap dispensers.”

The toilets at Jackson’s Bay are open from May to September. The nearest alternative toilets are at Western Shelter, Barry Island, which are open all year round.

The provision of public toilets is not a statutory responsibility of the council but the authority recognises that proper public toilet facilities are an asset to its tourist areas and town centres.

Unfortunately, council-owned public toilets have been the target of anti-social behaviour in the past, including graffiti and vandalism. Customers are asked to help the council reduce these problems by reporting any incidents to visible services on 02920 673000. All information will be treated in confidence.
