Rugby star goes back to school
Promising Welsh U21s and sevens rugby starlet Dafydd Hewitt recently went back to school in Llantwit Major to present certificates to children who have attended St Illtyd's Primary School Rugby Club during the spring term.
The club, run by Tim Jones, rugby co-ordinator at Llantwit Major Rugby Club and Mr Esmond the PE subject leader at the school, aims to introduce tag rugby to children who have never played the game before.
Tim was particularly pleased that the girls who came to the club enjoyed learning the core skills of the game and an invite was made to all the children to join Llantwit Major RFC to continue to enjoy playing rugby. Following the success of the club, the school will be playing in inter-school tournaments from next term.
After presenting the children with their certificates, Cardiff Blues player Dafydd was happy to answer questions from the children about his life in professional rugby. He gave the children an insight into how hard he has to work to play rugby at regional and national level and spoke about the places he has visited with the Welsh sevens team, including Hong Kong, Dubai, New Zealand and America.
He also told the children that his favourite players are Scott Gibbs and Blues team-mate Gareth Thomas. Dafydd was joined on his visit by Matt Silva, the Vale of Glamorgan Council's rugby development officer and head coach at Llantwit Major RFC. As Dafydd and Matt left the school the children formed a tunnel to clap them off in time-honoured tradition.
