New bridge between Barry town centre and Waterfront moves
closer
A £1.6 million Vale of Glamorgan Council footbridge project
linking Barry town centre and the Waterfront has moved a step
closer with the signing of the contract for its construction.
The chosen contractors for the construction of the Thompson
Street footbridge are Carillion, who are due to start work in early
March. The bridge should be open by late 2009.
Cllr Rhodri Traherne, the council's cabinet member for economic
development and regeneration, said: “This project has been both
demanding and complex and I would like to pay tribute to officers
in finally bringing it to fruition.
"I hope that everyone can see that this project is another good
example of the council’s commitment to the regeneration of Barry
and clearly demonstrates that the council is prepared to continue
to invest in our public realm even during a period of downturn in
the economy.”
Cllr Chris Elmore, Castleland (Barry) ward member, said: “I am
very pleased, indeed, that the contract for the Thompson Street
footbridge has at last been signed. There is no doubt at all that
the footbridge will make a huge difference to the people of my ward
and will provide a much-needed strategic link between the town
centre and the Barry Waterfront."
Rob Quick, director of environmental and economic development,
said: “This project has benefited from close working with both the
Welsh Assembly Government and Associated British Ports, who are
both providing significant support to the scheme.
"We are pleased that the contract is now signed and that works
will commence next March. Along with the recent upgrading of the
Barry Docks Station, this scheme clearly demonstrates that a
partnership approach to regeneration can produce excellent results,
and we look forward to future support from our regeneration
partners."
