Young footballers pick up skills for the top!
Penarth Town Football Club has teamed up with the Vale of
Glamorgan Council's Dragon Sport team to develop the game at grass
roots level.
Through the Dragon Sport scheme, the club has been able to
access additional resources, training and support to work with
young players.
Special coaching sessions were recently put on for year four and
five pupils at St Joseph's Roman Catholic Primary School. Penarth
Town FC’s child welfare officer Phil Carter and U10s coach Wayne
Stock visited the school, and despite rain forcing the session
indoors, the children loved learning new skills and drills.
Dragon Sport is a national Sports Council for Wales funded
project run in the Vale of Glamorgan by co-ordinator Rachel
McGuinness and assistant Pete Hardwick. They encourage children to
participate in eight identified sports – football, golf, cricket,
tennis, rugby, athletics, hockey and netball.
Rachel McGuiness said: “We focus on offering sporting
opportunities for children aged seven to 11. The scheme is also
involved in training volunteers who wish to get involved with their
local sports club, or start their own community sports club."
Penarth Town FC operates a pay to play policy on Saturday
mornings. All ages are welcome with the U10s, U14s and U16s always
on the look out for new players to sign up.
The club are also offering a fantastic free football training
session on a Monday night from 5-6pm at Penarth Leisure Centre. Any
interested parent should contact Phil Carter on 07788 493557.
