Further extension of Alleygates scheme in Barry
The highly successful Alleygates initiative is set to be
extended to new areas of Barry, greatly reducing opportunities for
crime in the town.
£160,000 of funding has enabled over 60 additional gates to be
installed in the Buttrills, Court and Cadoc wards, bringing the
number of gates to 293 – protecting over 4,000 properties.
This concludes the current phase of the initiative, using
funding from the European Union’s Objective 2 programme through the
Welsh Assembly Government and match funding by the Vale of
Glamorgan Council and Safer Vale Partnership.
By closing off escape routes through the erection of special
security gates at both ends of back lanes and alleyways, with only
adjacent residents and authorised bodies given unique keys, the
project reduces the opportunity for burglaries and other forms of
crime and disorder.
Vale Council Cabinet Member for Visible and Building Services
Cllr Geoffrey Cox said: "This scheme is an excellent example of the
partnership between the Council, South Wales Police and the Fire
Service."
Chief Inspector Huw Smart, South Wales Police Vale of Glamorgan
Division, said: “Dramatic reductions of up to 74 per cent in
different types of crime and disorder have followed the
introduction of the security gates. Residents are telling us how
safe they feel when the gates are installed.”
