Barry Island is flying the blue flag!
The Vale of Glamorgan Council is proud to announce that
Whitmore Bay at Barry Island has been awarded the prestigious
international Blue Flag for 2008.
This is the third time that Barry Island has received this award
and it becomes one of the forty-two beaches and marinas across
Wales to fly the Blue Flag this year.
Vale Council Cabinet Member for Visible and Building
Services, Cllr Geoff Cox is thrilled for the community and visitors
to Barry Island. He said: “We should all be proud that Whitmore Bay
has achieved Blue Flag status. Residents and tourists alike have
access to a world class beach that has met stringent assessment
criteria.”
Cllr Cox added: “We kindly ask visitors to continue to respect
cleanliness and leave only their footprints in the sand. I would
like to thank our front line staff who work hard to ensure that our
coastal services are run efficiently.”
Blue Flag assessment criteria includes environmental management,
educational information, water quality, beach cleanliness, health
and safety and related services.
Vale Council Cabinet Member for Leisure and Tourism, Cllr
Anthony Ernest said: “Blue Flag is certainly a prestigious
international award scheme. Tourists can visit over twenty-two
countries around the world and be guaranteed that the beach or
marina they are visiting is world class. We are over the moon that
Barry Island has been added to the list and is one of the best in
Wales.”
The Blue Flag campaign is administered in Wales by Keep Wales
Tidy, the European Commission, and the Welsh Assembly Government.
Blue Flags have been flying at beaches in the UK since the scheme
started in 1987.
