Youngsters bowled
over by fun beach cricket and boccia at Barry Island
Pupils from Vale of Glamorgan primary schools were hit for six
at the annual beach cricket festival at Whitmore Bay, Barry
Island.
Nine teams took part from six schools – Barry Island, Gwenfo,
Iolo Morgannwg, Wick and Marcross, High Street and Palmerston.
The day was organised by the Vale of Glamorgan Council's sports
development team, and Dragon Sport assistant Pete Hardwick said:
"The event was very much based around fun and all the children had
a great time on the beach – not only playing cricket but also
building the biggest sandcastles and digging large holes!"
A demonstration boccia
event was also played on the promenade by four teams from
Palmerston Primary School, and the children from the other schools
were all very keen to join in and have a go.
Boccia is a game similar to boules, and was originally created
for people with cerebral palsy but is now widely played by
individuals of all abilities.
Pete added: "There were no winners and losers on the day –
everyone had a fantastic time playing sport and having fun in the
sunshine."
