'Our Big Read' launch at County Library
The County Library in Barry hosts the launch of the Vale of
Glamorgan's 'Our Big Read' event on Wednesday, 30 July.
Throughout the summer, in conjunction with 'Our Big Read,'
residents are being encouraged to read 12 shortlisted books and
vote for their favourite.
The shortlist will be revealed by Vale of Glamorgan Council
cabinet member for lifelong learning, Cllr Tony Hampton, at the
launch which will be preceded by entertainment from storyteller
Michael Harvey.
Chief librarian Sian Jones said: "Anyone who would like to come
along and join in the celebrations can be assured of a warm
welcome." The event starts at 3.15pm, with the shortlist
announcement at 4pm.
'Our Big Read' follows the selection of Barry as one of two
'Reading Towns' in Wales - the other is Llanelli. 'Reading
Towns' is an initiative funded by the Welsh Assembly Government to
mark the National Year of Reading, and events and activities are
being organised with the support and assistance of the Welsh Books
Council.
Sian added: "We were delighted to have been successful in our
bid to take part in the Reading Towns initiative which is a
wonderful opportunity to celebrate the Year of Reading in Wales and
to generate a programme of activities for readers in Barry and the
Vale.
"We will be planning a number of projects, including a creative
writing project and an art project using the themes of the chosen
books. We plan to hold a big weekend of events in the autumn based
in the County Library in Barry where people come together to enjoy
a programme of author visits, workshops and other reader-focused
activities. Our aim is simply to celebrate reading."
