Outstanding features at Welsh medium primary school

Time for readingStaff, governors and parents at a Welsh medium primary school in Barry are delighted at receiving an excellent report from school inspectors.

The inspectors found the standard of pupils’ behaviour at Ysgol Sant Curig outstanding in all aspects of school life, youngsters being very courteous and considerate towards their peers, staff and visitors alike.

The report also highlighted the quality of teaching as a strength in the school and a very important element in the progress pupils make and the high standards they achieve. Outstanding features of teaching include the feeling of respect which sets an excellent atmosphere for promoting effective learning; motivating and interesting presentations, and very effective class management. Teaching was judged to be grade 1 or 2 in 84 per cent of lessons against a national average of 79 per cent.

Among many other outstanding features of the school, the inspectors recognised the excellent standard of pupils’ bilingual competency. The school is particularly pleased with this recognition given its location in an area where the majority of pupils come from non-Welsh speaking homes.

Play time!Teachers at the school were also pleased that, as well as the high praise given to their curriculum teaching skills, the report recognised the outstanding range of learning opportunities that they offer to pupils outside normal school hours at Ysgol Sant Curig.

The inspectors also recognised the effective relationship that both parents and governors have with the school.

Welcoming the report, headteacher Sian Owen said: “We are extremely proud of the findings of the report, particularly in relation to the standards of the children’s behaviour and the quality of our teaching. Acting upon the recommendations of the report will enable the school to build further on the very good work already being achieved by a committed and enthusiastic team of pupils, staff, parents and governors.“

Chair of governors Dr Sian Rhiannon Williams said: “The report recognises that this is a caring school where the children are both happy in their learning and achieving high standards. Such an outcome would not be possible without the excellent work that is being undertaken here by such a dedicated and professional team working with our children. As governors, we are very proud to be a part of Ysgol Sant Curig.”
