Schoolgirl puts forward proposals to improve road safety in
Sully
A year seven pupil from Stanwell School in Penarth has met with
Vale of Glamorgan councillors to discuss the dangers faced by
Sully's residents when crossing the village's main road.
Emelie Johnson wrote to the council recently to highlight the
problems local people, including school children, have crossing the
busy South Road at the eastern end of the village.
With the aid of
'Google Earth', Emelie put forward proposals to councillors for a
new pedestrian crossing to improve road safety at the spot near the
library. Accompanied by her mother Claire and younger sister
Rebecca, Emelie met with Vale Council cabinet member for planning
and transportation Cllr Jeff James, and the two ward members for
Sully, Cllr Sarah Sharpe and Cllr Anthony Ernest.
Cllr James commended the quality of Emelie's plan and the amount
of work that she had put into its production. Cllr James said: “I
will ask the council’s engineering section to keep Emelie and her
Mum informed of progress with the proposals because I was so
impressed with the background work she has undertaken to establish
the need for a crossing near the library. She has also shown how
dangerous it is for her, her school friends, and other members of
the local community, to cross the road at this point.”
Other discussions centered on the site of the school bus stop in
relation to the proposed crossing. Consideration will be given to
moving the school bus stop closer to the crossing to ensure pupils
are able to use the crossing as part of their route to school.
Funding for a zebra crossing near the library, the removal of
the traffic islands, and an extension to the existing cycle path
has also recently been obtained following a successful 'Safe Routes
in Communities' bid for Sully Primary School.
