Major works at Merrie Harrier junction
Major improvement works start at the Merrie Harrier junction at
Llandough on Friday, 18 July.
This is the first phase of an eventual bus prioritisation scheme
which will involve the construction of a 400 metres long bus lane,
with provision for cyclists, on the eastbound side of Cardiff Road
leading to the Merrie Harrier junction area.
The scheme has been promoted by the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s
planning and transportation division and funded by the Welsh
Assembly Government as part of a policy to introduce bus lanes at
appropriate locations. The design and construction are being
undertaken in-house by the council’s visible services division.
Head of planning and transportation Rob Thomas said: “This is an
important scheme which is being undertaken to encourage people to
change travel habits and to switch from using cars to using buses
and cycles."
Head of visible services Miles Punter added: “The first phase of
the works in the junction area is programmed to commence in the
school summer holidays when commuter traffic flows are generally at
their lowest.
"However, because of the nature of the works, some delays to
traffic are unavoidable and drivers are encouraged to seek
alternative routes for the 16-week construction period if at all
possible. I would like to apologise in advance for any
inconvenience caused to motorists."
