Scope supports pub's tidy effort

A popular Barry pub has been praised for its efforts in helping to create a cleaner community.

The latest initiative of the Glenbrook Inn at Dobbins Road was a litter picking event supported by the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s waste management team, Keep Wales Tidy and volunteers from Scope, a charity supporting those with cerebral palsy and based at Sully Skills Centre at Hayes Road. Their team of volunteers regularly support similar local initiatives.

Cleaning up outside the Glenbrook InnCouncil senior enforcement officer and Vale woman of the year Denny White helped organise the event with Keep Wales Tidy project officer Ian Harvey at the request of pub proprietor Arthur O’Leary. Denny said: "This was a great team effort which helps to make a more pleasant environment for customers, residents and visitors."

She added: “We must all work together to change attitudes and behaviour. And this will, ultimately, make a difference on how we collectively approach what we do with our rubbish.

Mr O’Leary said: “We firmly believe that first impressions count, and I’m pleased to report that we don’t have a major litter problem in the area. We work proactively with the council and Keep Wales Tidy and take a pride in our local community. We encourage pub visitors and our neighbours to care and to recycle rubbish or at least put it in the bins provided. It was lovely to be involved and I would like to thank everyone for helping.”

A 'tidy' effortThe Glenbrook Inn has been run by the same family for the past 26 years and, in 2005/2006, was voted the best local community pub in a newspaper competition. It has also picked up a string of awards in the annual Vale in Bloom competition. And they are keen to continue their good work.

Cabinet Member for visible and building services Cllr Geoff Cox said: “The Glenbrook Inn show best practice of how one establishment, its staff, neighbours and customers are making a difference. Their pride and concerted efforts should be praised.”
