Summer of sport for Vale youngsters

 

The Vale of Glamorgan Council's sports and play development team will work with partner organisations to provide a variety of sports opportunities for children and young people during the summer holidays.

 

Free taster sessions will be delivered by Vale Karate at various playschemes and Play Ranger venues including Llanilltud Fawr Primary School (Monday, 28 July), BP, Sully (Wednesday, 30 July), St Cyres School, Penarth (Tuesday, 5 August), Rhoose Community Centre (Monday, 18 August) and Romilly and Victoria parks (Wednesday, 20 August). Serving for the match!Penarth Sea Angling Club will offer a free taster session on Sunday, 27 July, from 12 noon to 4pm for children and young people aged eight and over. The session takes place at the far end of Penarth Pier and spaces are limited so must be booked in advance. Please contact Julie Morgan on 01446 704754 to book a spot.

 

An organisation working in conjunction with the Vale sports development team on many of its projects to offer quality coaching opportunities, First Step Skills are hosting a number of summer sports camps aimed at children aged five to 12 years. During the camps, participants have the chance to try sports such as cheerleading, tennis, basketball, cricket, street dance, netball, football, athletics, rugby and dodgeball. Each sport is delivered by a specialised coach and, during the sessions, there are visits from GB athletes and certificates and prizes for all participants.

 

The cost of attendance is £10 per day or £40 per week. Spaces are limited so please call 029 2039 0998 to secure a place or visit their website on www.firststepskills.co.uk/Holiday.php. Camp venues are Cowbridge Leisure Centre, St Cyres Comprehensive (Penarth) and Bryn Hafren Comprehensive (Barry).

 

First Step are also working in conjunction with UK Athletics to deliver the Norwich Union Star Track course. Based at Cowbridge Leisure Centre (28-30) July) and a Barry venue (18-20 August), the three-day courses cost £25 and are aimed at seven to 13 year olds. The structured and exciting coaching sessions provide an opportunity for participants to try all events including throws, runs and jumps. The sessions will be delivered by qualified coaches. Football fun this summerThe sports development team has organised two football fun camps for eight to 10 year olds at the Colcot Sports Centre, Barry. A five-day course (10am-2pm) from 11-15 August costs £47.50 and includes the cost of a T-shirt. The registration deadline is Monday, 4 August. There is also a three-day course from 27 1329 August at a cost of £28.50; registration deadline (Monday, 18 August). Places must be booked and paid for in advance.
