Council leader hosts twinning 'preparation event'
The range of activities and programmes available for young
people in four 'twin towns' are being explored at a special event
in France this week.
Seven representatives from the Vale of Glamorgan Youth Service
have travelled to France where they will be joined by youngsters
from hosts Fecamp, Rheinfelden (Germany) and Mouscron (Belgium) for
a civic engagement exchange programme. The 16 to 18 year olds are
led Hannah Wilcox and Rhys Simmons.
Vale council leader Cllr Gordon Kemp, who hosted a 'preparation
event,' said: "During the week, the young people will participate
in workshops where they will share their experiences of being
involved in youth programmes in their home country and have an
opportunity to meet young people from other cultures. This will
help them improve their skills in group work and communication.
"The preparation evening included the young people planning a
‘Welsh night’ which they will present to the representatives from
the other countries during their stay. This will explain all
aspects of Welsh culture - from the red dragon to Duffy!"
Trip leader Hannah said: “This is a unique and fantastic
opportunity for young people from the Vale to experience other
cultures and share experiences and knowledge. As a youth worker, to
have been able to extend this opportunity to our young people is
simply wonderful and it is a credit to the Vale council's twinning
scheme.”
Travel and accommodation costs are being covered by Maison des
Jeunes et de la Culture in Fecamp through a grant from the European
Youth in Action Programme. Representing the Vale are Marcel Cordle,
Michaela O Neil, Carlie Hopkins, Stefan Ross, Olivia Rabjohns,
Hayley Pocock and Rosie Snell.
